Hi
I've just got my ipaq kitted out for GPS, and it's finally working nicely. One of the things I wanted to do was see how accurate my bike and car speedos are - the car is relatively simple, but on the bike it is a bit trickier to see in TomTom3. Does anyone know of any software that will simply display my speed in bloody big letters, or is there a way of doing it in TT3?! I'm using a rikaline BT receiver and ipaq 4150.
Cheers

Hi, in TomTom map view, click properties at bottom of screen, then set your safety speed very low, like 5mph. This will cause your screen to "black out" but the speed indicator is larger than on navigation screen.
Hope this helps. |

Out of interest, are GPS speed displays pretty accurate? I notice that my GPS system (Toshiba e570, Globasat BC-307 and Destinator 3) reads abot 5mph slower than my car speedo at around 40mph and closer to 10mph slower around 70mph. I presume that the GPS reading is more accurate, but by how much? |

If you are travelling at a constant speed for several seconds on a flat road and in a straight line, with a good satelite fix then the GPS will typically give a speed reading which is accurate to 0.1 MPH
If your speed is changing then the speed indicated by the GPS will lag behind reality.
If you are going around a corner or up/down hill then the GPS will read slightly slow.
A car speedo will typically read 0-10% fast to allow for manufacturing tolerances, tyre wear, different brands/types of tyre etc.
(Dave, maybe we need a FAQ about this one - it has been answered lots of times. ) _________________ Gone fishing! |

You don't need to change your safety speed. From the TomTom menu choose "Turn Map Off" then it will give you the safety screen at all speeds. When you are ready to see the map again you can choose that option again to turn the map back on. |

Was gonna have a moan and ask why they set a safety speed, then i looked in mine and noticed its set at 124mph!!
You'd have to be pretty stupid to go that fast, certainly no faster than 90-100mph on a deserted motorway in the middle of the night |

I've seen 145 MPH indicated on my speedo, the GPS reported it as 138 MPH when I ran out of road, the bike was still accelerating hard.
A friend has seen 176 MPH reported on his GPS, the speedo was reading close to 190...
This was done on a private test track of course, not a public road. _________________ Gone fishing! |
