Sport-tool incredibly slow to lock onto GPS?

Have just bought a R400 to help me train for a marathon, to accurately measure how far I'm running. Nice piece of kit but it seems to take 5-6 minutes to lock onto a GPS signal, somewhat longer than the 90 seconds stated in the manual. I expected that the first time, but it takes this long even if I turn it on in precisely the same place I turned it off.

I'm in London, but try to turn it on in a place where I can see lots of sky. Worst is that if the signal drops out for too long (e.g. if you nip into a shop to buy some water) it will take another 5 minutes to lock on again, and won't even guess the amount of distance you've travelled in that time.

Anyone else got one of these yet, and having similar problems? Any advice as to how I could speed up the process? (I don't know a lot about GPS, but have a TomTom Go which I love) I can't stand outside for 6 minutes every time I want to go for a run!

the backup battery on the sport-tool may be defective. can you try a replacement?

Went back to Navman support, who told me I was the first UK support request for the R300.

Not terribly helpful, they said it could take from 45 secs - 8 mins to lock onto a GPS signal and that London wasn't the best place to get GPS locks. All of which I knew but didn't really address the point that even at a place with lots of sky, at the same point it was switched off, it takes several minutes.

Have passed the sport-tool on to a friend that lives in the country for him to try, while I've bought a Garmin Forerunner 201 which seems much more reliable and rapid at locking onto the GPS signal.
