Jornada 540/GPS/Software

Hi,
I am a newbie to SatNav systems. but can't afford a new package.

I have an HP Jornada 540 with USB cradle, and can get a GPS receiver and lead which will connect to it.
It's not clear to me what's next.
If I buy suitable software eg TomTom UK maps how do I load them onto the 540, and will they work, recognise the GPS and give me voice routing?
The 540 has pcm sound.
I have a 64Mb CF expansion card. is it big enough ?
I have a PC and Laptop,MS Active Sync etc.
I am electronically competant, and can sort running the system from the cigar lighter in the car.
