You would be better looking for a Navteq based system.
Take a look at CoPilot
Navigon, Medion, Mapopolis and Garmin also use Navteq maps.
Coverage of Ireland (North and South) is limited but Navteq and TeleAtlas are both in the process of updating their Ireland maps. Pretty much all the major roads are done, Belfast and Dublin have been fully mapped for a while now and a number of other towns are fully mapped. Many towns only show major roads though.
The most important thing is that you get the very latest maps because the coverage is improving with every map release. You should also try and find a dealer who can demo the GPS unit to you and take a list of towns you know so you can check out the map detail.
Be aware that many suppliers use older map data too. Even though you are buying the latest version of a product, the maps may still be 18 months old. Read Dave's excellent article about his visit to Navteq for an interesting insight into how GPS mapping works. _________________ Gone fishing!

Oh, I forgot to say. Garmin have an online map viewer at: http://www.garmin.com/cartography/ontheRoad/ so you can see what the map detail is like. "City Select Europe v7" is the map product you want to look at.
And too, by the way! _________________ Gone fishing!
