tom tom died

went to use tom tom nav 3 today, it would not show the route as you went along, it was slow to update, although the written route planner was there and the voice was working.
it gave me a strange message about checkpoint having a file it could not read. I reloaded tom tom -- no good-- I ended up totally reloading everything, which took ages, the only thing I did diferently was I never plugged in the unit last night, although there was plenty of battery power left.

I have locked the starage card now in the belief that will prevent any corrupt files Y /N any ideas what I did wrong please.
