Shareware maps

Can anyone tell me if there are free basic maps/software available for download to a laptop that could be used for positioning using GPS in real-time. And would this give basic navigational data such as speed, directions, etc.

If all you want is the GPS info and it is NMEA compliant then I use some Labview code I compiled a couple of years ago, this decodes the information and dispays lat, long, speed, etc. not too sure about free maps for your area - mike
