Just been given a SPV M1000 by those nice people at Orange, bought TomTom Bluetooth for PPC, now all I need is a car mount/cradle.

I have seen this:

and wondered if anyone could comment on it, good or bad, before I buy one?

I guess nobody on this forum has tried this mount then...

I went ahead and bought it anyway, and to my disapointment I cannot give it a good review.

As a PDA mount with GPS use in mind, I can't really fault it - it does what it says on the tin. However, my specific hardware is a SPV M1000, which is basically an XDA2, a mobile phone. This is where the problems start.

The design of the mount requires a small lead to plug into the headphone socket of the phone to pick up the audio signal for the amplified speaker. Whilst this does give excellent sound, it also causes the phone to think it has a hands free kit plugged in. This in turn disables the handsets microphone.

This therefore renders the phone useless should someone call whilst it is in the cradle - I can hear them in perfect clarity but they can't hear a thing. Add to this the fact that the built in speakerphone function of the phone is also disabled when the headphone socket is in use.

The only thing you can do if a call comes in is to quickly pull out the lead, and then press and hold the answer key to get the speaker phone to work. Not what I had in mind when I read the advertisement and far from useful when I am driving.

As the mount is specially designed for the XDA2/SPV M1000, I would have thought that the manufacturers would have thought of this problem and dealt with it in a more adequate solution.

Sorry I didn't see this earlier Sad I have an XDAII and use a Carcomm XDA Cradle (see here) which suits me. It doesn't have any amplification but I manage without.

As far as the phone side goes I vary between using the handsfree speakerphone functionality which does at a pinch and a BT headset.
