What to buy?

I'm a newcomer to the world of GPS and could use some advice.

I'm looking for a GPS primarily for use in the car in USA. I am always in different cars so it must be easy to carry around.

I want one that will give me directions to an address but will also automatically re-configure the route should I miss the turning.
I would also like it to take memory cards.

Any suggestions or advice would be greatly appreciated.
