Sat Nav for Off-Road

Hi All,
Great site, lots of info and all.

I'm wanting a Sat Nav for off-road use and been researching my requirements but there seems to be so much available. Quite daunting really.

I'm not really sure which route to go down. My assumption is that because I need OS style mapping which shows lanes, tracks etc. that the most suitable/flexible solution would be PDA based.

If PDA is the way forward I would appreciate any recomendation on which one to go for. I would like as big a screen a possible but don't need or want the many PDA feature other than use for GPS.

It's unlikely that I would use the GPS other than in my vehicle. I'm not saying money is no object but I'm not looking to do this on the cheap.

Any feedback would be much appreciated.

Hi Dave,

Have you considered Memory Map? This piece of software can run on a PDA and also a desktop PC. You can buy the whole of the UK in separate packages for each region (North, South, etc.)

It has useful features for walkers and off-roaders, such as being able to plot a route on your desktop PC beforehand and also to view areas in 3D mode (so you can see the hills and features of the land.)

You can buy arial photographic views of each region too, so that you can walk through a route on your PC in 3D photographic mode.

My boyfriend runs Memory Map on an iPAQ 2210 and this seems to work very well with no problems. The 2210 is a popular iPAQ for most software (TTN3, etc.) and is a nice, compact, lightweight PDA.

Thanks for the info. The Memory Map software looks wicked, just what I need I think.

Looks like the ipaq 2210 is a good recomendation too, thanks. I've just been browsing posts and it seems later models with all the bells and whistles are more than I need.
I use a Mobile phone (P910i.....fantastic) for all my PDA type data and have no need to duplicate it but it's too small a screen for GPS.
