TomTom3 slow on Ipaq5550 with SD card

Hi,

I have installed tomtom3 plus the traffic service onto my HP 5550. I have installed the maps onto a Dane Elec 256MB SD card. When i start tomtom, it takes a good 50secs to actually load the application and calculating routes do not seem that fast. For instance, going from Plymouth to Woolwich (London) takes on average of 1min for the summary page to appear. From what i have read, this sounds slow.

Does anyone else have this issue? Could it be the SD card that i am using? Other applications installed include MNotes, Sprite backup, pocket informant5 and omega1 battery pack. Does anyone have any suggestions as recalculating routes whilst travelling can take a considerable amount of time.

Post any codes and markings from the back of your SD card. I can recognise most card manufacturers from those codes.

The problem that you have is not unique by any means. There seems to be a number of problems with TT3. I happen to work at a store that sells TomTom and we have had many customers complaining about the software being slow and locking up the PDA.
I'm afraid it is just anothe case of a manufacturer releasing software and then waiting for the unsuspecting users to report the problems. I imagine that there will be fixes but that could be some way away. I have emailed Tom Tom but so far they have not responded.

Your issue is most likely related to the a problem with the SD card, nothing to do with TomTom. Whilst TTN3 has some issues these are no more than other apps, the simple fact is that TT is by far the most popular for good reason and hence any issues are more widely discussed.

Thanks for the replies. The Number on the back of the card is AR0304LR, China.

Do most other members find it takes this long to load?

It's the SD Card that is the cause of your issues I'm afraid. If you have access to one not manufactured in China try that and I'm willing to bet that it will be much improved.

What is the best make to go for, and where is the cheapest place to buy from. Does it make a difference if its fomatted to Fat 16 or Fat32?

The best make appears to be Panasonic but as a rule of thumb avoid Sandisk and any card labelled as having been made in China or PRC. Taiwan and Japan are OK Thumbs Up

AndyR, those numbers you quote look suspiciously like Sandisk to me! I also have a 256mb SD card with numbers very similar to yours also made in China and it is a Sandisk - I gather there are re-badged Sandisk SD cards also which could well be yours. There have been quite a few posts about this problem recently and if you check back you will find that a lot of people changed over to Lexar 32x High Speed SD cards and bought them via Ebay. I have recently ditched my Sandisk 256mb card for the same reason (incredibly slow) and also bought one of these Lexar cards. Have to say the difference is SIGNIFICANT!
The guy I (and others on this forum) bought if from is called Eugene Buccellato and he trades from Great River NY. He currently charges £39.79 plus £5.99 postage. Total cost of £45.78 is about £20 cheaper than I could find for the same card in the UK. The guy is totally reliable and delivery to the uk is about 4 business days. I was well impressed and would certainly buy from him again. The postage is a bit of a rip off (his £5.99 is about 10 dollars and the actual postage is 1.60dollars!) but the overall cost is still good which is all that matters really!

BTW, Plymouth to Woolwich took just over 20 secs on my Lexar card.

AR0304LR is Sandisk - the older type of Sandisk which is even worse than the newer ones (though they're far from perfect).

It doesn't seem to matter where a card is made if it's Sandisk - the mere fact that it is Sandisk makes it a bad card.

For decent SD cards, you don't really have to turn to the US now. For 512MB, order an Integral 512MB SD card from ValueFlash and mark the 'intended usage' field "Must be Panasonic". Buying an Integral SD card could get you just about anything, but ValueFlash had a batch of Integral 512MB cards that they know are Panasonic - I don't think they've run out, as I bought one last week, but it's always a risk. Panasonic made SD cards are, in my opinion, the best there is at the moment. I'm using one of these cards myself.

Do not try this for other sizes of Integral card - I don't think ValueFlash have any Panasonic made Integral left in other sizes.

If you want 256MB, try the SimpleTech ProX 256MB from clove.co.uk

Thanks for all your advice. I've checked clove.co.uk and they appear to have an offer on the 256M simple tech pro-x card that has a sustainable tranfer rate of 10MB. Unless anyone knows of a problem with this card, i will try it out.

That's great news - chalk up another Sandisk 'victim' whose system works a lot better once the Sandisk made SD card is replaced.

ant it's quick.

It's slightly smaller than my old SANDISK 256 MB and therefore I had to add a small paper clip to hold strongly the card to contacts inside slot in my iPAQ 3970.

Other than that, it's really quick.
