I have been looking at TomTom Navigator for my HP HX4705 PPC and would like some advice on whether to buy the TomTom package with their bluetooth GPS or whether to buy some other GPS unit and then buy just the TomTom software separately. One option would be the new Teletype 16 channel bluetooth GPS. Also I would like to know what topo map sw can be co-resident with the TomTom software. I particularly like the 3D function offered by TOmTOm - are there other alternatives that are as good.

Hello and welcome.

Given the poor track record of the TomTom BT receiver I'd suggest you indeed go ahead and get just the software plus another BT GPS. Doesn't have to be 16 channels - that's overhyped.

When you follow some simple installation rules (especially in the TomTom GPS driver area) any topo software can coexist on your iPAQ. Memory Map, Ozi Explorer, etc.

Programs on par with TomTom are CoPilot 5 and Navigon MN|4. To a lesser extend Navman Smart ST Pro and Destinator.

TomTom GPS 3.07 causes no problems on an iPAQ hx4700 / 4705 - and is the recommended version for WM2003SE machines. There's no need to reverse any Bluetooth stack changes, as TomTom GPS 3.07 doesn't make any on this hardware.

The Bluetooth serial port you need to select on an hx4700 / 4705 is COM8:. There's no need to use any Bluetooth hacks or patches if you use GPS 3.07.

GPS 3.07 is a VGA application - it's a shame that there isn't a VGA version of Navigator 3 (even if it had the existing QVGA icons).
