Hi,

I am thinking of buying tomtom software, I have a compaq ipaq 3660 with 64mb of memory and windows ce v3.0.9348 and nothing else (no jackets, bluetooth etc.).

Can you guys tell me what will i need to buy in order to make this into a GPS system above and beyond the Tomtom software (still need to work out which version) ?

Initial research seems to imply; jacket, memory, charger, holder etc.

I am starting to think it may be cheaper to buy a complete kit.

Also do you know if i will need to update the os on my ipaq

Thanks in advance

You need

- a jacket to hold the memory card
- a GPS receiver - either serial, or a GPS jacket (which includes a memory card slot)

The OS is just fine. You can even run TTN3 on it.

Sorry to be a pain but do you know of any GPS sleeves with memory slots that are compatible with the ipaq 3660 ?

I have been doing some looking around and came up with the same product the Emtac iPAQ GPS Jacket. Does anyone have any feedback on this product, on first glance it seems to fit the bill perfectly

It's ok. The sensitivity is not spectacular, but it does have a SiRF low power chip set, so is a bit easier on the iPAQ battery. Good thing is you can connect a MCX antenna.

I like the fact that no special driver is required - it simply exposes COM4 for you to use.

I started with a TomTom wired GPS, then moved to an Emtac BTGPS and now I have settled with an Emtac GPS jacket for my iPAQ 3970. It is a very neat setup, but as Lutz says it does lack in sensitivity. Although to be fair the position of my iPAQ is quite a long way down the dashboard.

The good points are:
1 No wires other than power to the jacket. This too is neater as the there is no need for the flat iPAQ adapter as the jacket accepts the round pin connector.
2 No need to recharge a BTGPS.
3 CF card slot in jacket.

As you can tell, I am pleased with my current setup.

Richard

Hi,

Couple of Q?

- what is a MCX antenna
- when you say lack of sensitivity do you mean lack of signal , i am in the uk
- would you still recommend ipaq 3660 and emtac jacket as a sat nav and poss speed trap system

thanks

Rav

MCX is the slightly larger connector (the one on top)

Sensitivity - the jacket may not hold up against one of the newer XTrac v2 chipsets, and may really need the external antenna for solid car operation (it works perfectly fine in walking mode). This has nothing to do with your location, it's a function of the chipset-antenna combination.

Can you use the 3660 for navigation? Definitely ! There are thousands of people doing exactly that.
