HI i bought a nice new PDA, but got a copy of Tomtom 3 from a car boot sale. I installed it all fine , right up until i tried to run it for 1st time and it asked for an activation code. I went t www.ttcode.com and entered my Product key code, only to find i coudn't g any further because it had already been used on another device!

Isthere any way around this problem, as I really have no money left to purchase a new Tomtom software.

Cheers
Mike

TomTom have a policy of not helping in such cases; there are warnings on their web site about second hand copies of Navigator.

If it's locked out for a long period (more than a week), that copy of Navigator has already been activated on two machines. It makes you wonder why someone's activated it on two machines, then put it in a car boot sale.

There's no legal way to use the software until you've waited out as much as 180 days - and when the next version of Navigator is launched, if the previous owner upgrades first using the Product Code, you won't be able to upgrade either.

you say no legal way without waiting, does this mean there are other ways out there?

Hi Mike,

TomTom Support wrote:
TomTom Navigator requires online software activation. All copies of TomTom Navigator are sold with a product code. This product code can be used to activate the software on one device.

Second hand TomTom Navigator products are likely to have already been activated once or more by the first buyer and the product code may therefore no longer be valid. For this reason we advise our customers not to purchase TomTom Navigator second hand. If you have already purchased a second hand TomTom Navigator product and cannot activate the software, we suggest you return it to the seller.

How much did you pay for the software, if you don’t mind me asking?

The only thing that you can do is try and find the seller if it’s a regular car boot sale.

Failing that, you could try selling it on eBay, but you will have to say that the product code has already been used to activate the software. Somebody may want it if they have broken their CD and have a legitimate product code.

Regards,

As a matter of policy, we do not discuss and do not permit discussion of attempts or methods to circumvent copy protection or product activation systems. TomTom have their policy and we must abide by it. There's all sorts of fiddles possible if they permitted early activation of copies bought second hand.

The only circumstances in which they'll permit you to activate a device before your Product Code has waited the necessary time is if you've finished up with a different Device Code through a PDA being repaired or exchanged in lieu of repair - or if you can produce proof of your Pocket PC being stolen and replaced. They need documentary proof in either case - in the first case, papers from the repairer or retailer involved, and in the second case, police or insurance company papers.

As Robert (privateer) says, you could try to eBay it - but you'd have to acknowledge the product is already activated otherwise you'd get complaints. I would say it's pretty much worthless, especially as anyone who has lost or damaged a CD may be able to get one from TomTom if they can quote a valid Product Code.

There is a chance that the seller has kept hold of the Product Code - it's the Product Code that's the valuable part of the pack, not the physical packaging or CD. If they beat you to registering for the upgrade when the next version of Navigator is allowed, you won't be able to get a reduced price upgrade. TomTom only allow a Product Code to be used once for buying an upgrade.

I'm afraid the truth is that you've been ripped off.
