Hi, I am new today to this site and new to GPS, so I hope that this, the beginners lounge, is the correct forum for me to be using.

I wish to purchase a Bluetooth GPS to use with my iPAQ 5555 for, primarily, walking on the mountains and in the forestry areas in Wales. It has been suggested to me that I consider the Fortuna Clip-On.

I am told that there was to have been a new model available in September of this year, which would obviate the need for a 'pin' for changing modes, but I am unable to find any reference to it anywhere. Does it exist or is it due out shortly?

However, it has also been suggested by another person that the Clip-Ons have been subject to unreliability, though I suspect that all devices may fail from time to time.

Is this device my best option?

With many thanks

I've just bought a Clip On, and am happy with it. Changing modes is a bit tricky (and can't be done reliably with a stylus) - but this is not an everyday operation for many people.

The reference in the Pocket GPS World review to a new device was more a look ahead to future GPS chipsets, I believe. SiRFstar III is coming - it may mean there's no longer a need to choose between Xtrac and standard SiRF firmware as the one chipset / firmware combination will have the advantages of both.

That said, the Clip On is a fine device as it is. Most of the Bluetooth GPS failures reported in the forums are of the TomTom Bluetooth GPS.
