I have just aquired a Compaq Ipaq and want to use it to replace my old HP Jornada set up ( Navman GPS 1000 and SmartPath software)

What I want to use is the Navman SmartST V2 software with it loaded onto a storage card , then a Brodit cradle with speaker and connector for use with the TomTom wired GPS receiver.

I'm assuming that the brodit connector will allow the PDA and receiver to be powered up with a single cable connected to either cigarette socket or hard wired.

I'm also assuming that the SmartST gives me voice navigation , POI's and spped camera database options with UK/Europe maps which also effectively have City street detail on them as well.If so the TomTom Navigotr 3 would be too expensive as I would also need Maps of Western Europe software.

Also the TomTom receiver looks neat but are there any better ones for the money?

All comments / views would be gratefully received - particularly confirming that the set up I want will give me what I want !!

SmartST V2 does have street-level mapping and voice guidance but will not give you custom POIs, which also rules out using the speed camera database.

The iPAQ 3970 is still a good model. I've kept mine even though I have a 5555 as well, since the audio output on the 3970 is miles better. It has an SDIO slot, so you can store maps on an SD card and keep it in the iPAQ.

You could consider a navman sleeve, which also has a built-in CF slot, which would give you another storage option, or you could choose a BT unit.

Navman SmartST V3 for the PocketPC will apparently be out 'soon' which will allegedly be available in UK only or full European coverage, and bundled with a BT unit would be one package to consider. V3 will allow the import of custom POIs.

Thanks for the comments Tim - if the SmartST V3 is as expensive as TomTom Nav 3 including extra Maps of Western Europe which would you go for ?

Glad to hear you like the 3970 - it's a work freebie so I want to keep it in my new set up !

I'll chck out the BT reviews.

Although prices haven't been officially released, most e-tailers are quoting £79 for British Isles and £149 for the full European maps. I have seen some bundles advertised too, but again they have not been officially announced by Navman.

I think that choosing your software and hardware is a very personal thing, and I think that what you first choose is more often than not the stuff you stick with. I've used Navman since day one and I like it. I've since had the opportunity to try the latest offerings from Tomtom and Navigon and just couldn't get on with them.
