How do I tell if my TOM TOM BT receiver is still receiving a signal? and what lights should I expect.

Hi,

The best way of checking if you are still receiving a signal is to go into the GPS screen of Tom tom. Just tap on the screen in navigator and then use the "More" symbol until you reach a screen with "GPS Status" on it. Click on this and you will get a screen come up with all that is going on with the GPS Status.
If it is communicating you will see black dots going between two symbols there will be some bars moving in the slots below (Some should be red if locked on!) if they are all grey then there is no lock. if it is all blank then you have nothing going on and the best thing to do is a sft reset and try again!.
Do you have a bluetooth receiver by any chance? If so fit the latest patches form TomTom and then you should find the problem eases!.

The TomTom BT unit will have the blue light permanently on when a bluetooth connection is established and flashing when not. The red/green LED next to it flashes when the unit is receiving GPS data.

Actually the green light only flashes once the GPS has a navigation solution.

Depends on what it means by "established satellite connexions". If in the GPS status screen the satellites are all grey (i.e. it knows which ones they are and where they are, but hasn't yet managed to triangulate) then the green LED doesn't flash. It's only when it has a nav solution with 3 or more satellites (i.e. 3 or more displayed as red in the GPS status) that the green LED starts flashing.

Hi I'm new to the whole GPS set up, so please excuse my ignorance.

These satellite connections are what I am am having trouble with.

I have just purchased a Tom Tom bluetooth GPS receiver (ebay) and I am not having much joy with the sat. connections.

When I sit in my car with my older Destinator 2 (wired) connected to my XDA II (TTN3 Maps) I am connected to 7+ Sats with over 75% signal.

When I change over to my new bluetooth Tom Tom the sat. signals drop from 7 down to 2, both below 50% signals, therefore I am not getting a GPS connection.

Is there a problem with my new receiver or am I missing something I should be doing.

Please help

Is your new receiver sited in the same place as your old one? Some cars have heat-reflective windscreens which will prevent the signals getting through. They usually have a gap in the heat-reflective bit near the rear view mirror to put the GPS receiver in, though. Otherwise it'll have to go in the rear somewhere.

If it's not this, it sounds like your BT GPS receiver might be duff. I'm on my second one (first one gave up and went back to Tomtom) which receives a lot more satellites than the old one did.

I have to say I am also on my second BT receiver and my old one had a similar problem to yours i.e. it could see some satellites but would never lock on to any. After consultation with TomTom support (Via Phone) the receiver was changed and I now get 7 -10 regularly!.

Will there be a problem with Tom Tom if I tell them I bought the unit new and boxed from ebay.

Will this be frowned upon.

Or shall I speak to the ebayer who sold me this unit

Well I have established that there is a BT link (through BT Manager)

but still no birds in the sky.

When Iswitch the BT GPS on the green light comes on (presumably to tell me that it is there and can work)

Apart from the GPS status on TTN3 is there any other way?

Or should I return the Unit.

When you turn it on, the green led will come on for around three seconds then go off and then into flicker once suitable GPS is data being processed or solid red when it needs charging.

It can take a while when it is first used to get a fix, try it out of the car in a open space.

The device can be totally reset by letting the battery go completely flat or by dismantling the unit (2 screws) and unplugging the internal battery wire for a few seconds. (This would invalidate your warranty if they found out, but sometime you don't want to wait for hours for a battery to flatten).

A program called Winfast Navigator in the Leadtek downloads section of this site can be useful for viewing the data coming out of a Bluetooth unit, but it is not for the technically challenged.

Technically challenged, yup thats me. I am going down route two and draining the battery.

I did try to download the programme but nothing happened.

It would appear that by draining the BAT on the BT has indeed reset it . The birds are in the sky and I wont get lost today
