|
|
Hi
I'm wanting to buy a bluetooth gps receiver that has a real on and off switch so that I can hardwire it to my car to switch on with the ignition without having to switch it on separetley.
I know that when I switch the ignition off it'll probably change to running from it's battery, but that doesn't bother me.
From all the reviewed bluetooth gps devices, does anyone know which ones would be suitable. |

The Emtacs and their clones (like the CoPilot BT) have a "real" switch _________________ Lutz

I'm sure that all receivers have a power on button, but whether they power on automatically when the power lead is plugged in is debatable.
lbendlin, are you saying that the Emtacs automatically power on when the power lead is plugged in?
The Navman 4400 automatically powers off when there's no bluetooth activity after three minutes. |

yes, the Emtacs power on automatically when external power is applied AND the switch is in the ON position - even if you have removed the battery.
I recently reviewed the DeLorme BlueLogger, and that one does NOT have an on/off switch - it has a software button. There are more of these devices around (eg TomTom BT GPS), and they are not suitable for in-car hardwiring because they will NOT switch on automatically.
I have no experience with the Navman receiver. Not sure how it behaves in such a scenario. _________________ Lutz

The Royaltek RBT-3000 also has a physical On/Off switch. _________________ Darren Griffin |

I've just tried my Navman 4400 and if the car battery power is cut off the push switch on the gps has to be pressed when power is switched back on so count this one out !

I am sure almost all would switch off automatically when there is no BT connection for a certain period so you will have to switch it on.
What difference does it make to press the button when/after you turn on the ignition?
Unless you want to hide the GPS somewhere. _________________ Pc-Mobile

Hi Andrew,
How about using a normal wired mouse with the Semsons Bluetooth mouse cable?

Thanks for all the responses.

That's exactly the reason why. So I don't have to go fiddling around to find it each time I start the car.

I'm wanting to get away from cables if I can as it clutters things up, plus if I then ever upgrade pda, I'll probably need to upgrade the gps as well. |

would the fortuna clip on be suitable also? that looks to have a real switch
I like the sound of the fact you can run it without the battery (for in the car) but stick the battery in if going walking. |

You will need to be aware of this when choosing a receiver... The Navman 4100 for instance needs batteries in all the time, even when being powered by an external source. _________________ Ian.

Hi oddsock.
The 4400 does use the same receiver... a 4100
I'm just quoting what I read in the user manual which states... Quote: | Important note: It is recommended that the 3 AAA batteries are installed at all times, even when powering the GPS4100 from the vehicle power charger |
It can't be that bad if you are using yours without them. _________________ Ian.

I have only used it like this to experiment in order to give in put for a previous post in this thread! I can't see why it should harm the gps because on most electrical items with internal and external power supplies the internal suply is disconnected on insertion of the ex power cable(Phew)
Perhaps Navman are different so probably best to go by the book until reliable information to the contrary is available ( In the meantime I have mailed navman ) dave |

Coincidentally I tested my 4400 without batteries a couple of days ago and it worked fine. Just a speculation, but the recommendation to keep batteries in it might be to speed up fix times when powering up. These should be quicker if the GPS knows where it was when it was turned off, and the batteries could possibly maintain the last known position in memory. However, position acquisition is pretty quick anyway. _________________ Kam |
