Maybe we should clarify what you mean with verbal. On my GO I can only choose between "Ding", "Dong" and "DingDong" for POI alerts, but not "Speed Camera Alert" or such things.

The sounds do definitely come up when I am cruising along, have selected alerts for certain POI categories, and have unchecked the "Alert only when on route" mark.

If you want to have the GO say something meaningful when approaching a POI you will have to figure out the structure of the data.chk file, convert your desired WAV file into OGG format, and repackage it in to the data.chk.

Not as trivial as changing the language specific voice prompts.
