As I partly bought my GPS (Acore BT) for measuring and plotting hills that we run on our longboards, I'd like a program that saves the max speed. Is there any program that can do that? It's a pain in the ass to have to watch the screen on my PDA going 70+ kmh downhill.

TomTom will let you log your journey so that it can be replayed later. What it actually does when you do this is simply stores every NMEA sentance it receives from the receiver. You could analyse this data later to find the highest speed.

Be careful about trusting the GPS speed. It is only really accurate in a straight line on level ground over 5 seconds or more. Going down hill and changing direction frequently will probably make the GPS read slow.

Is there a way to make TomTom skip the roads and track my actual position? We're not always riding on the roads that are marked on the map.

You may want to take a look at OZI Explorer or Fugawi, reviews are here: http://www.pocketgpsworld.com/menu_gpstopo.php

These will allow you to scan a map (eg OS map) and plot your path, speed, direction, altitude etc on it.

What is an 'OS map'?

OS=Ordnance Survey, the UK equivalent of the USGS (US Geogical survey).

if you're not from the UK it would be useful if you entered your location in your profile as it helps when answering queries Wink
