Please help. My wife needs a simple unit to use in the woods while walking her dogs. What product is light weight, and easy to use? Do these units have maps on a screen like our car unit, or do you navigate some other way in the woods were there are no roads? I find the technololgy and choices confusing.

Some of the handheld units (Garmin, Magellan) do allow to download some limited maps . Screen resoluiton is not perfect but should be sufficient for her to find her way back without being overwhelmed by technology.

If all she wants to do is to find the car again, or to find that spot she walked to last week, then a basic handheld GPS would be best. There's no map, it's just a blank area which plots your starting point and a bread crumb trail as you walk appears on screen. You can setup marks/waypoints along the walk so you can find your way to these by looking on-screen to see where you roughly are in proximity and direction to the waypoint you have saved.

Handheld GPS are cheap, around £100 upwards, if you want full rich colour Ordnance Survey style maps for off-road use, you can go down the route of the PDA, but you'll ultimately be paying around £500-600.
