If I get a cheap iPAQ car charger, cut off the cigarette lighter adapter portion, and hardwire that to a power source in my car, will I be OK charging my Emtac Trine? Do I need to somehow keep the fuse and extra circuitry (if there is any) between the power source and Trine?

I'll still be turning it on and off, and removing from the vehicle occasionally - I just need to get it some power while in the car.

If you are doing this to simply hide the wires round the back of the dash, the recommended way seems to be to hardwire a hidden accessory socket, and then plug the unmodified cable into the socket, thereby ensuring all the fuses / voltage convertors etc. are still in place.

Thanks for the suggestion.

I'd planned on cutting wires to install my PDA mount as well... Now I guess I'm just headed to Radio Shack for a power adapter splitter. I'll connect that to my power source, and just plug in the mount and GPSr charger.

Thanks.

You will need to keep most of the components as the cigar plug contains a voltage converter. This drops the voltage from 12v to 5v. Putting 12v directly into the Trine is very likely to blow the GPS.

You probably just saved me from making a pretty silly mistake!

I ordered an iPAQ car charger which I'll use for the Trine and picked up a Radio Shack adapter / splitter that it will plug into along with my Arkon mount. Since these other adapters have fuses and circuitry, I'll just cut off one end of the RS splitter and wire it in under the console - should make for a fairly tidy installation. Not to mention it's not permanent then!

Thanks for all the advice!!!
