If so, what are the timescales ?
Also, is there anything i can do to make the map update faster??? seems very very jerky, and i guess it's because of the 1sec gps update intervals, but on some occasions i have made the turn at a roundabout, and TT still shows me as not having made the turn so it is lagging a bit. Will getting a faster PDA make a difference ? I have an Ipaq 3850 btw.
Thanks |

Most probably, but who knows. I'm sure TomTom will be issuing updates for months to come.
Jerkiness is usually down to the amount of memory you have available (program memory) clear some of your program memory down and make sure you have around 15mb free.
Another thing can be down to the speed of your SD or CF card, they come in different speeds, some cards are better for certain Pocket PC's, so this may also be affecting the speed.
One more thing is the hardware, you're running an old 3850, these are quite a few years old, run a lot slower processor and this is probably more likely the problem. Most Pocket PC's now run 400Mhz nearly double the speed of the 3850, and this like most PC games will be what developers aim for. |

Ok thanks,
Tell me, When your map moves as you make turns etc, is it smooth(ish) ???
I just want to know how smooth the map refreshes are on the newer Pocket PC's as you drive along ( 2fps, 3fps ??? )
Mine is like 1 fps......but i know my PPC is probably not up to scratch
Thanks |

The GPS only updates it's position every 1 second, so the maps will reflect this. |

1fps is slow, it's difficult to really tell unless I could see it, but it sounds to me that you are being affected more by processing power and memory than anything else.
GPS updates are every second, but GPS software do make assumptions to keep you driving on the same course, GPS software won't be as smooth as 30 fps, and you will see if you are turning a corner that there may be a gap before your pointer changes direction, but the way you are describing it, it does sound that memory/processor is impacting it more.
Check out an online demo at http://www.globalpositioningsystems.co.uk/flash/ttnavigator_paris_eng.swf if you are finding it's worse than this, then it's down to memory/processor. |

I have never seen my TT map update more than once a second. That demo doesn't look like it is a true reflection of TT in action. Because is you look at the way the map rotates as you turn corners, it is far too smooth. TT can only update your direction every second because it uses the last 2 positions to calculate. |

Wow, i was going to say !!! Mine isn't nearly as smooth as that !!!!! 8O
Mine only updates once a second as well. Are there any other people here that has their maps rotate smoother, like on that movie ?
Just want to get a feel of what your experiences are, so i can compare it to what i experience
Also, what would you suggest as the IDEAL PDA to run this software on and with the Fastest SD slot ?
Thanks |

After driving today with TT running, I noted that the map updates at about 5fps. |

I run on a 3870 (basically a 3850 + bluetooth) with no performance problems apart from address lookups if I load the entire UK maps... |

OK, but is it as smooth as that movie clip demo ? Or do you find it to be more "stuttery".
I have to say my route caculations and lookups are very quick usually, and i have no problems with that -it calculated a 140 mile route in about 30 sec flat.
Only my map updates are slow, it is litterally like a slide show (each refresh of the map is about 1 second apart)
Once again, what is the BEST PDA currenly to run TT3 on ?
Thanks |

I have also realise that the voice instructions sometimes cuts it very fine. Sometimes i'm AT or VERY CLOSE to the next procedure before the woman SPEAKS !!
How can this be changed so that she speaks a little bit quicker before an upcoming manuever ( say about 5 seconds before a turn etc.... )
I was also wondering if the default warning intervals can be changed...
currently she warns you at 300 or 200 or 100 or 80 yard marks, but can this be customised in any way ( say instruct me at 40 yards ).
I have read somewhere on this forum about the fact that it calculates your posistion from the OTHER end of a roundabout or junction/road etc. Why don't they change it to measure your location from YOUR posistion TO the manuevering point and not the other way around ?
Your thoughts ? |
