TomTom Announce New Location Referencing Technology

Article by: robert
Date: 9 Sep 2009

pocketgpsworld.comWith a goal of wide-scale adoption, TomTom have announced the development of an open-standard dynamic location referencing technology for the navigation, mapping and ITS (Intelligent Transportation Systems) industry. The technical community at large can also contribute ideas to improve it.

The aim is to help enhance existing applications by boosting the potential for connected navigation and location-based services on any digital map. It is also hoped that opportunities for new services will be generated.

Designed for traffic information systems and dynamic route guidance, OpenLR is an open-source, royalty-free technology that can be adapted to the requirements of system integrators. It will be used for transferring traffic information and forecasts from a central point to in-vehicle systems, whether built-in or used as an add-on for PNDs (personal navigation devices) or smart phones.

TomTom's Director of Product Engineering, Mark Gretton says "This technological development is being introduced to the open source community to assist in delivering location based services to customers”. He added "TomTom will use this technology for its own services too, allowing us to transmit content like HD Traffic to connected devices and improve service quality and coverage."

On the face of things it sounds a good idea.

Unfortunately I can't help thinking about the TomTom SDK (Software Development Kit) that allowed third parties to develop add-on applications that also enhanced the existing application. TomTom then stopped its current applications from using add-ons created by using the SDK. Will TomTom do the same with OpenLR?
