Russia believed responsible for Israel GPS interference

Russia has been blamed for GPS interference affecting airspace around Ben Gurion Airport.

Israeli officials believe Russia was behind the GPS disruption although Russia deny it.

The interference is believed to originate in Syria and was in the form of spoofing rather than simpler jamming of the GPS signal. GPS receivers were being fed with incorrect location data, something that required advanced technology. Similar spoofing that affected shipping has been seen in the Black Sea in 2017.

Aircraft approaching Ben Gurion Airport have reverted to using the Instrument Landing System (ILS) instead of GPS data, a statement from the Airports Authority reiterated that at no stage was there a safety issue during the outage.

If anything technically abusive can be done, the Russians will do it. GPS is a vulnerable system that requires open and ethical participation. It doesn't bear thinking about too closely!
