French interior minister Christophe Castaner has announced that France's road deaths have reached a 'historic low' - 3,239 road fatalities were reported last year.
Mr Castaner commented: "This is a historically low number. It's actually the lowest number we have seen since records began. This is because we've brought strong policies to road safety. Our citizens are aware of the risks on the road, and we must, alongside them, help people to understand that behaviour change [and] measures for road safety, are measures that change lives."
The figures follow on the heels of a reduction in speed limits from 90kph to 80kph on national roads across France. However, not all agree that there's a connection.
Following the limit change, up to 75% of the country’s speed cameras were vandalised at an estimated cost of €660 million to the French government.
The national road safety agency, l'Observatoire National Interministériel de la Sécurité Routière, suggested that the damage may have been a factor in the 17.1% increase in road deaths recorded for February 2019.
