A cutting-edge camera has been introduced to the roads of New Zealand. They can operate in all weather conditions, day and night.
They not only catch drivers speeding, but also those using hand-held mobile phones.
During a month's testing in October, 11,000 motorists were monitored by the high-definition devices using their mobile phones whilst driving.
The New Zealand roads minister commented: "Shockingly, one driver was pictured with two hands on his phone while his passenger steered the car travelling at 80kph, putting everyone on the road at risk. We saw people on Facebook, people texting. We saw people trying to be tricky by having their phone below the window line of their vehicles."
She added: "It is a very dangerous act to keep your eyes down low and not on the road, which is why this technology we expect will have a huge impact on driver behaviour and therefore road safety."
There will be more trials for three months from January. Drivers will not be fined during the testing, but will receive a warning letter.
