Following on from our recent story of a reduction of speed fines in Wales, comes a story about a significant increase in Devon and Cornwall.
There were 19,094 speeding tickets paid in 2018, a record, and 7% more than the previous year.
There was a total of 46,363 motorists caught resulting in 2,186 court actions and 24,593 drivers attending speed awareness courses and 489 fines were cancelled.
According to Home Office figures, cameras were instrumental in detecting 97% of the over 2 million offences across England and Wales last year,
It is also reported that 74% of cases where drivers were caught ignoring traffic directions, such as following right of way road signs, were attributed to the use of cameras.

Just proves it's all about the money and not road safety, otherwise drivers would not be speeding.
I saw at least two speed camera vans on the A38 coming back from Plymouth the other week.

With these cameras being everywhere and anywhere I would have thought that road behaviour would have improved but it seems not.
Speeding is still a major problem, you speed, you pay.

You'll need to explain the first sentence.

Quite simple I thought?
They are happy for us to break speed limits everywhere while they sit in their vans targeting drivers for cash, but not actually stopping anyone from speeding.

I often see it posted about it just being about the money.
I've never contributed ...... guess why

Other than that, a third party cannot stop someone from speeding unless that someone is speeding. |
It still won't stop people speeding that don't have a licence or insurance and don't care.

So what would you suggest as a viable, cost effective, 'non profit making' alternative.
Just have a free for all and hope everyone does as they are told by the speed limit signs?

Fortunately the 'no licence, no insurance, don't care' mob are a small percentage. Those that do take to the road legally need to observe speed limits or face the self inflicted consequences.
Latest comical one yesterday was 2 side by side HGV's in the M4 smart motorway roadworks, in a reduced lane width stretch, taking all 3 lanes as they both seemed to be on identical 50mph cruise settings.
Matey-me-lad in his polish registered Octavia couldn't get past and was blasting his horn to no effect. Just made lorry No 2 straddle the outer lane a bit more

Small numbers maybe but getting caught all the time around my area.
Recent catch- driver stopped for no insurance showing on PNC. Car seized. Following day the same driver stopped again , different car, still no insurance. Car seized.
And Mr Polish driver had better be careful. If UK resident his car will also be seized.
