Berg Insight - 4.3m European Cars Have On-Board Telematics

Article by: Darren Griffin
Date: 18 Nov 2010

pocketgpsworld.comAnalysts Berg Insight report that there are now 4.3 million cars in Europe equipped with on-board telematics. Telematics is defined as the convergence of information and communication systems.

Trackers used for stolen vehicle location occupy the largest proportion of this number with emergency caller/driver assistance and motor insurance tracking taking up the remainder.

Driver assistance systems are far more commonplace in the US with OnStar, a system offered by GM being the largest. Using an on-board data terminal and cellphone, the vehicle can send data on vehicle status, accident sensors etc and GPS position and drivers and passengers can make voice calls to OnStar to request emergency assistance.

Such options are yet to filter through to mainstream models in Europe but Berg Insight report increased activity in the OEM market. Currently, telematics are fitted to less than 2 percent of all cars on the road. The European eCall project seeks to have a network in place to support a similar service to OnStar by 2015 with a projected 28 million subscribers. France and UK are the only EU member states yet to support the eCall initiative.
