Apple WWDC - New iPhone Today?

pocketgpsworld.comI'll open with an apology to those of you who don't have an iPhone and have no plans for or interest in one!

For the rest of you, today sees the start of Apple's 2009 World Wide Developers Conference in San Francisco with the Keynote Speech which is typically the time when new products are announced.

Alongside the release of OS 3.0, a large update for iPhone, today is also expected to see the announcement of a new 3rd Generation iPhone handset. Although the specification is not known, hackers have scoured the OS3.0 beta releases and discovered hidden references to video functionality and a magnetic compass amongst other things.

OS 3.0 was officially announced in January and at long last it will permit the use of turn-by-turn navigation. This news gave the green light to developers with CoPilot, NavNGo, Sygic and TomTom all having iPhone apps ready to go.

The addition of a magnetic compass has already got developers thinking of new and novel uses for such a feature. From the obvious ability to have a street map rotate as you turn around to more intriguing suggestions such as apps that can look up information based on what you are pointing at.

There are also rumours of a budget iPhone handset at a $99 price-point. Keynote starts at 10am PDT (6pm UK) and we will summarise the announcements where they concern GPS later this evening.

So, when is the o/s 3.0 likely to be available? Today / Tomorrow?

Hopefully today. They've already taken down the Apple Store online... always a good sign Wink

What will be really interesting is if there are NEW apps made available to take advantage of the new OS. All existing app updates over the last few weeks have been required to be OS 3.0 compliant, but there's been nothing introduced to take advantage... the hope is that some new ones may have been held back to have their launch coincide with OS3 - who knows, maybe a turn-by-turn app, perhaps?

We'll know in a little over an hour or so.

iPhone 4/4S (iOS 5.1.1); TomTom Western Europe (1.10)/USA & Canada (1.10); CoPilot for iPhone (8), UK mapping, Mac OS 10.8/XP Pro/Win7; Tongue firmly in cheek!

Announced at WWDC:
Peter-Frans Pauwels announcing iPhone integration for TomTom. Both software and hardware integration. Optional car kit. iPhone variant of their Easyport mount, allows hands free calling, transmission of ipod music, charging. (I only wish it wasn't from TomTom, because I know I'm going to need it!)

The worst kept secret of the year but TT is coming to iPhone. Carkit looks nice. Integration with in-car stereo for turn by turn announcements welcomed.
