Apple Product Launch - iTablet, iSlate blah blah
Article by: Darren Griffin Date: 27 Jan 2010
I make no apologies for raising the topic of Apple's product launch today. Conscious as I am of devoting more of our news and coverage to the Cupertino nemesis, I cannot ignore the hype that has been building ahead of whatever it is that is announced after 6pm GMT today.
If we take a small leap of faith and assume that Apple are indeed going to launch an iPhone OS based tablet device with a 10" or thereabouts screen it would be a reasonable assumption to guess that it will be a connected device and will contain a GPS.
So, with a suitable cradle we could conceivably have this in-car as a large screen navigation system, entertainment hub and web access portal.
If it is any of these things then we may just see some news accompanying the launch of navigation solutions from Apple themselves. They have been hiring GPS experts recently and they are rumoured to be considering a Google divorce.
Time of course will tell but for those of you who are interested, many sites are providing live coverage of the product launch with updates on all the salient points as they are announced.
We will update this thread if it transpires that the product launch is of interest to GPS users!

The iPad
iPhone looking device with a 9.7-inch IPC LED screen
1Ghz Apple A4 processor
Full capacitive multitouch screen
Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, but no mention of a SIM-card slot
Comes complete with a compass, accelerometer, speaker and microphone
The iTunes, App Store, Contacts, iPhoto and Calendar applications have been given an iPad friendly aesthetic overhaul
It weighs 1.5lbs and is just 0.5-inches thick
It has a ten-hour battery life, which is boosted to one month in standby mode
It comes in 16GB, 32GB and 64GB flash memory models
It does not appear to be Flash-ready
It can display newspapers such as the New York Times, brilliantly, showing off a new way to digest newspapers online, while retaining the design integrity of the newspaper
The on-screen QWERTY keyboard is huge and appears very easy to use.
On first appearances, most of the typing is going to be done with the thumbs while holding the device in two hands
The new SDK for the iPad is being released today, but all iPhone apps will run on the iPad
iPhone 3Gs 32GB
using TomTom & CoPilot

Sounds like an iPOD for those with impared vision, if you need a 9+" sat nav in the car I would get your eyes tested as perhaps you shouldn't be on the road!
Seriously though I wonder what market this is aimed at as its a rather large lump to carry around let alone try and use in a vehicle! But I guess being a new Apple product hundreds of thousands will queue up to purchase it irrespective of the price - Mike

I still can't decide whether I want an iPhone. I had a quick look at the picture of Steve Jobs holding the iPad and it immediately reminded me of Trigger Happy TV Dom Jolly's mobile phone.
(I'm not knocking Apple - I love my MacBook and just wish I could get to use it all the time).

If it tastes good - it's fattening.

This might be too much of a niche market. After all the hype, I don't see this being a product like the iPod or iPhone in terms of sales.

Hmm. Well i wouldn't want one.
Well, when i say "i wouldn't want one" i mean i do want one, i just don't want to want one. I mean, obviously i want one, but the cost... But then it could replace a laptop and my ipod and my phone. No wait, it's not pocket sized. But a GPS that you could lay out like a map and if it could be mounted in the car and be the music player, sat nav, traffic guide, play a film and be a handsfree phone. Wow.
I do want one.
I think.
No. I'd probably just break it....
Damm, Apple. Always making good looking stuff i want. But i'll have the last laugh. Just because they make me want it doesn't mean i'll go out and buy one. I win!
I think.
Think different...

I am sure this will sell iballistic.
But pay me no heed, I predicted the Segway would be the mainstream revolution of personal transport.
