AT&T reveal iPhone Turn-by-Turn App
US iPhone customers have another turn-by-turn app to consider as AT&T have now unveiled their solution.
Launched a week after NiM's Gokivo, AT&T Navigator is free to download from the Appstore and also has a £9.99 per month subscription fee.
Map data is downloaded over the air as required with the subscription providing real-time traffic and map updates at no additional cost.
Navigator is powered by Telenav and features voice guidance, 3D map, automatic re-routing and real time traffic updates as well as gas price search.
Unusually, AT&T are not using in-app subscription via the iTunes store but instead, the monthly bill will be added to the customer's AT&T phone bill. This is surprising as it avoids Apple's 30% share of the revenue.
Customers should also be aware that the payments will continue to be charged until you end your Navigator subscription with AT&T, deleting the app on your iPhone will not stop the payments.
Given how price sensitive the US market is, it is difficult to envisage how subscription services such as this will prove popular.
There is already resistance to Navigon's iPhone App launch price. It is understandable that customers will compare iPhone software priced at $80.00 with full blown PND's on sale for $99.
