£20m in Essex speeding fines may be refunded due to blunder

pocketgpsworld.comIt's been a bad week for Speed/Safety Camera Partnerships. On Sunday we wrote that Dorset may have to refund £1.5m in fines due to errors in a traffic order for a Chideock speed camera.

Now comes news that Essex may have to return £20m in speeding fines following a blunder that meant tickets issues by the enforcement department were not legal.

The situation arose after it was discovered that a civilian employee responsible for sending the penalty letters to drivers may not have had the authorisation necessary in law as required by the 1988 Road Traffic Offenders Act.

The error in authorisation stretches back four years and estimates calculate that means nearly 300,000 motorists could be affected.

Essex Police are now discussing the matter with the Crown prosecution Service to establish their position.

There will probably be a wriggle out of it policy that they'll magically produce. Something to do with not having the funds or something! But £20Million. Shocked

The front page News item has a read more link which takes you to the article page. Same can be achieved by clicking the image in the lead post here.

Thanks for that Darren I'll have to find the newsletter article because the image in the lead post takes you to a PGPSW page as indicated by the alt text

The link from the image icon in this thread throws me to an index page as it cannot find the article so somethings not quite right somewhere? - Mike

Fixed. The front page news item creates a web page and forum post auto-magically.

But it is not intelligent enough to realise that '£' signs and similar are not valid characters for a web page and so the error as seen here occurs.

I then have to re-visit the posts, edit the links to remove the illegal character in the page name and then edit the page name.

I'd forgotten to do that to the forum post.

That's correct, it isn't in the Newsletter as that was sent out yesterday?

In this case the 'Read More' is a little misleading as all the editorial is contained in the news post. For other news items, the news post is a summary with the full article after the jump.

Well I am looking forwards to getting a refund for my SP30 from March 2007. However I will not be holding my breath! I suspect that they will use an excuse such as"you pleaded guilty, therefore the conviction remains". Crying or Very sad

Unfortunately on that day, I was running late so I did not boot up my TomTom and associated camera warnings. Embarassed

It's not just about refunding fines though - some people may have lost their licence and consequently lost their job, had their home repossessed and their family break up .
How can Essex police compensate them?
