Dear all,
I hope this is in the correct forum! My question is:- Is it possible to use TomTom for hiking? I have finally got it working on my HP2210 and am very very pleased with it (The bluetooth receiver went on the blink almost from the word go but thanks to TomTom support who got a new one to me in 3 days! it is all systems go now...no dropouts either!).
It may be a case that TomTom is no good for this but is there any other software that would do instead?.
regards,

As you suspect, TomTom is no good for hiking. There are two possibilites: Fugawi and Memory Map. Fugawi is much cheaper and does a basic job very well in my opinion. Memory Map has more features but is more expensive. |

Thanks!
I'll check those out! I don't suppose it is a wise idea to have both installed on an ipaq or does it matter?

I use memory map and TT on the same iPAQ. You have to uninstall the TomTom~GPS port locking software to use any other GPS program. The only other issue then is storage space for the maps. |

I'm thinking of using Memory map on my TT3 iPAQ
What is the 'port locking software' you referred to in the earlier posting?
Thanks _________________ Fraserp

TomTom~GPS is software installed with TomTom GPS that locks the port exclusively for TomTom use. You have to uninstall this before anything else can use the port. This does not uninstall the GPS function of TomTom. |

Just un-installed Tom Tom~GPS and I get "GPS Disabled" and TTN 3.03 no longer works. Had to re-install to get up and running again.
Proceed with caution

Actually, there are three possibilities for OS style mapping for walking, hiking etc...
There is also Anquet.
This software falls between Fugawi and Memory Map. As suggested the price varies and it is a case of deciding which to buy based on budget and features required. _________________ Ian.

Sounds like you uninstalled it twice or from the PC. |

I un-installed via the PDA using add/remove programs, and definately only uninstalled Tom Tom~GPS once.
Very strange, I'd try it again but I dont want to go through installing it all again. |
