I am having problems downloading more than 41 traffic incidents when using GPRS. I am using 02 contract and I want to try some other providers to see if I get the same problem on my setup. I am not going to take out contracts until I have resolved the problem so I am going to try PAYG from other providers. (I tried T-mobile contract and had problems, but that could have been the way a friends was set up).

Has anyone sucessfully used PAYG with TT Traffic?

So far I have found out that BT Home Plan (contract) and 02 PAYG do not offer full internet access.

I'm pretty sure that Orange pre-pay does offer GPRS Internet - though you need to use the APN "payginternet", not the "orangeinternet" that contract users use. You may also need to call customer services to have GPRS Internet access activated (which I believe is GBP4/MByte on pre-pay).

I'm also pretty sure that there's no GPRS Internet access on Vodafone pre-pay, though the only Vodafone pre-pay SIM I've got access to is one used in a phone that has no GPRS at all. That SIM doesn't have even GPRS WAP enabled on it - I did try. I'll try to keep you updated, MrT, on how my Vodafone contract GPRS works with TomTom Traffic (so far I haven't see the problem you're getting).

There's talk that Virgin Mobile will soon have GPRS - though, for now, they don't (not even GPRS WAP, so far as I can tell).

I have taken out an Orange PAYG and it definitely improves on the O2 when used with TomTom Traffic. I am currently getting in the high 70s number of incidents on Orange and just over 40 on 02. LAN is around the high 70s mark as well.

I use Vodafone too - the SIM was £7 and GPRS data is £2.35/MB.

Settings are:
Dial: *99#
APN: pp.vodafone.co.uk
User: web
Password: web

Use server-assigned IP address and DNS.

You need to call up to activate GPRS and internet access.

On my Dell Axim X50v with Audiovox GPRS card, I actually had to leave the APN blank to make it work - it doesn't seem to mind. Setting the APN correctly caused it to crash in the Axim though it worked fine in my laptop. Try both and see which works for you.

Also use Vodafone PAYT and can recommend it. I bought my SIM off ebay and then rang Voda to get GPRS unlocked.

Regularly get 100-200 incidents downloaded.

Not sure if it is the cheapest, but works very well. Not dropped the GPRS call yet and I drive all over Southern England.

I'm using Orange PAYG for internet access, not the cheapest, but the connection seems to be fairly robust compared to some of the others I've tried.

Anyone tried using a 3G connection, with someone other than Three?

Has anyone used O2 Pay & Go? If so what are the costs for GPRS data?

Cheers Pudders
