|
|
Having just bought a TomTom START (2GB I believe) with maps for Western Europe, I started up TomTom HOME and tried to exercise my 30 day "Latest Map Guarantee". It lists a new map "Western & Central Europe 2GB 1882.9MB" but tells me my device doesn't have space for it.
It doesn't download the map to my PC, or give me an option to do so, so I can't unpack it and remove unwanted voices as I have seen recommended elsewhere.
I have tried various things, to the point of removing everything except the existing map, but it still says "This item does not fit on your device". If I remove the existing map it doesn't recognise that I have a map to update!
I am waiting for TomTom support to get back to me, and also posted on tomtomfourums.com, but thought I'd see if anyone here recognises the problem.

Good eh! I wonder if you temporarily moving all the files except the map folder and contents will give sufficient space for the upgrade to proceed?
Have you already moved off the device all the and voices for other languages? _________________ Darren Griffin |

Yes, all that. Also removed some of the other stuff that HOME doesn't remove, using Windows Explorer, but still no joy.
Even tried removing some of the big data files from inside the map folder.
(Backed up the whole device using Windows Explorer first, of course).
This is supposed to be easy for a novice, the instruction manual is written for a 12-year-old!

Dies it give any indication of how much space it needs and what you have available?
Have you removed ALL the files except the map folder and contents? If not, worth a try but make sure you keep them so you can copy back when update is complete.
In fact, as we advise, take a FULL manual backup now before you attempt to update the map. _________________ Darren Griffin |

Haven't got it in front of me right now, but I think it's about 5MB short.

Tried that, done that.
Thanks, though.

Phone TT Support and ask them why their Home software is trying to update the device with the Western_Europe_2GB map when the Western_Europe map is about 30MB smaller in size and would fit, their phone number is 0845 161 0009 - Mike |

Ah nice one Mike, I did wonder if it was the right map but made the schoolboy error of assuming HOME would only offer the suitable one! _________________ Darren Griffin |

Ah, I see you recommended that in the other place too. I'm patiently waiting for TT Support to get back to me, I guess that's looking fairly certain to be the problem.
Thanks again.

Does your device have a raster folder?
If so, copy that to the PC.
The other option woud be to copy the entire contents of the TT to a 4GB SD Card, then connect that to HOME (without the TT connected) and HOME should be fooled into thinking you have a 4GB START and update the maps OK |

Fantastic idea! Did exactly that, then copied the "Western_and_Central_Europe_2GB" and the "maps" folders to the TT, and everything looks ok - creating routes works, and HOME says it's up to date.
Thanks for the help.
Wonder if TT support will ever get back with a solution...
