Since Navman was bought by Mitac there has been all sorts of speculation about what will happen to the Navman/Mio Navigation systems. Well at CES last week some of these questions were answered, with the announcement of the merging of the Mio and Navman Brands.
I travelled to Las Vegas in the same plane as David, Colin and Graham of Navman UK, and was looking for the Navman booth all week. It was only when I turned up at the Mio stand and saw the guys dressed in orange and black that I realised why I hadnt found Navman...
The concept of the merger is that the two brands will be run side by side, with Navman being sold in countries like the UK, Spain and New Zealand where the brand is strong and Mio being sold elsewhere. For the time being, at least, the two ranges will be seperate with Mio Map 3 being sold on systems in Europe and Navman on UK,Spain and New Zealand devices.

~Agreement combines Mio Technology’s hardware heritage with Navman’s software and content expertise~
LAS VEGAS – Jan. 7, 2008 – Mio Technology Corporation announced today that it is merging the Navman and Mio brands. Both companies are now subsidiaries of MiTAC International Corporation.
“With the merger of the Mio and Navman brands, two complementary organizations have been brought together with a shared passion for delivering consumers the best navigation experience,” said Samuel Wang, president, Mio Technology Corporation. “Mio Technology brings core competencies in hardware to the table, while Navman brings expertise in software and content, creating a new brand that is better able to create unique, innovative products and services.”
Despite the merger, the Navman brand will continue to exist in select markets, including the United Kingdom, Spain, Australia and New Zealand. Products from both Mio Technology and Navman are appearing at the 2008 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas (Jan. 7-10) at the Mio booth (LVCC South Hall 4, Booth 35344).
The Mio booth will feature a refreshed corporate identity, developed to reflect the new union of the Mio Technology and Navman brands. |

Mike Does this mean that if I want to buy a Mio in the UK I will not be able to and vise versa in Europe, where I will not be able to buy a Navman? Will different systems be installed on the two different brands? If so, which will be the best?
My son has a Mio and I a Navman. Will software be interchangeable?

I think the question is sadly now irrelevant as I understand Mio have chosen to go with Navman's software even on the Mio branded devices.
Their new brand 'MOVE' will use Mio hardware with Navman software. Only the brand name on the device will change with 'Navman' being used as explained above in traditionally strong Navman marketing regions and Mio elsewhere. _________________ Darren Griffin |

Personally I think it is a smart move - igo is used widely elsewhere (Mio Map), so Mio switching to Navmans' already robust software AND then investing in its developement will see both rewards for software innovation and competition within the industry, which will lead to better products all round. Although I'm tempted to jump on you for saying that I will remain mindful that I have been quietly hoping that Navman will be able to pull itself together after it's recent models. IMO navman have fallen quite a way and now have some ground to catch up on.
