|
|
HP have recently released half a dozen new Windows Mobile devices. The most interesting devices for our area are of course the ones with integrated GPS receiver.
While the iPAQ 610 and 910 are still vaporware (they won't be available until well into 2008) there is another iPAQ - the 310 series - which has a GPS receiver built in and is specifically designed as a navigation device, or "PND". Another difference is that the 310 is actually available for purchase both in Europe and in the North American markets.
We have thoroughly tested the iPAQ 310 and will discuss some of the GPS related findings here.

Its totally crazy that HP dumped the 5935 and 5720 for this. |

I like the look & spec of this device.
Lutz, could you clear up a few points please?
I've read another review of this device that in 2D mode the map is only displayed as North Up, not Direction Up (this is only is 3D mode) is this correct?
There is an option of an RDS/TMC adaptor, looks like a string aerial, any news on how good it is?
Also how good is the BT side of it as a handsfree for the mobile?
Is the only difference betweeen the 310 / 314 / 316 just the map coverage? _________________ HTC Desire S - Vodafone

2D mode is north up in most programs. This is normal. What you can do is change the 3D tilt to flat - gives you a pseudo 2D with direction up.
The TMC adapter costs extra. It is connecting via USB (which hints at some form of USB host mode on the 310). It is currently vaporware ( http://www.ipaq.com/navigate/accessories.do?methodToCall=viewAccess)
BT works ok as handsfree.
There may be OS language differences too. _________________ Lutz

You write that "The internal GPS receiver is easily accessible as COM7 at 9600 baud."
However, I can't programmatically access COM7 in my Ipaq 314 at all, because it is locked by something else all the time. It is not Nav.exe which is blocking, because I start from an exe in SD card. Also, I have changed igoautostart to 0 in ....\SYS.TXT as advised in the forums.
Could it be that the European version 314 is more crippled than the version you have tested? Has anybody really got any external software using GPS (e.g. some TomTom version) to work in the European version 314? Any other suggestions? |

how do you turn the pda into an activesync enabled device to have TC or TCPMP installed? do you turn it to serial class first? if so: how?
if not: then how? |

yes, you switch from USB Mass Storage class to Serial Port class.
Under \iPAQ\OS\Games create a new folder, and put the appropriate cecmd.exe file in there (the one for CE2, in http://ghisler.fileburst.com/ce/tcmdwincearm.cab )
This will then appear as a new game.
Or, even easier, rename it to CELauncher.exe and place it onto a storage card. Put the card into the iPAQ and soft reset. _________________ Lutz

How does this affect the GPS functioning and stability?
Also, how do I load on TCPMP to the device after doing the above manipulation? |

yes, interesting review. Although it is a bit frightening to see that they obviously have never heard of iGO. HP will do squat to change anything in the software. _________________ Lutz

Tim has heard of iGo before. He has reviewed tons of Mios and other iGo devices. In the comments section, he even refers to NavnGo.
Why do you think HP will not change anything in the software. Some simple things to do would be to re-enable deactivated iGo functionalities like Pedestrian mode and selective route exclusion, reconfigure the on/off button logic and boost the volume level on the speaker (if possible).
What I do know from an HP insider is that the TMC for Europe and maps on SD cards will be coming out in the next few weeks. |

I found a new way to avoid the battery leakage due to the misdesigned power button. All you need to do is to remove the battery cover - this will (de)activate the little battery switch and prevent the device from switching on and warming your shirt pocket or suitcase. _________________ Lutz
