I had to use Bluetooth and the Belkin dongle I have on my PC is not the best, but managed access the flash memory file system on the device and transfer voice file - a UK English female voice much better than the Colonel Blimp voice supplied. Availabe here:

Now all I need to do is get up to speed with updating the Miomap software, POIs and Cameras.

nice one Peasemold . I have added the voice zip file and it works perfectly. All i need now is for mio to put out a speed camera database that actually shows the corect cameras and not ones that have been taken down 2 years ago!!
I have deleted the camera database and run the sync again so i'll test it on the m6 on Monday to see if its taken out the rogue cameras 8O |

I've noticed that every time I run MioSync it tells me there is a new database to download - even today, Sunday. I would like to know whether this is an error or if they really are updating so frequently.

I have just bought a Mio 710 and I'm learning how to use it. First impressions are good. Excellent mapping, well displayed. The voice for English directions is a bit 'naff'. I noticed that there appears to be other files of UK voices available on the net and would appreciate any information from anyone who has replaced the standard file. I am not sure how to get into the hard drive to get the file into the machine. From reading, it appears that this can be done by bluetoothing from a PC. Any information on this appreciated. Finally, I have had the TMC working, but it seems to need a good signal. The standard wire does not seem up to it. I'm considering making up an attachment to connect into the car's radio antenna. Has anyone done this?
Regards,
Stefan |

Hi,
I tried to do the same with a Swedish female voice on my c710 but no success. I placed the zip file in the "Voice" folder on the mio (via Bluetooth) but it does not seem to be visible for the mio (does not appear in the language selection menu).
Do I have to reset the device? Do I have to unpack the ZIP-file?
/M

Hi tegel.
Might be worth trying a reset, I think I had to on mine.
Also, you do not have to unzip the voice file, just copy the zipped voice file to the voice directory on the Mio as you did.

Peasemold,
I'm trying not to appear dumb but I may have missed your instructions on how to install the voice. I have a Mio C710 and it sounds like all I have to do is access the device via Bluetooth which will give me a different type of view/file structure. Is this true? |

It depends on the bluetooth stack on your computer. If you only have object transfer, set the shared folder in bluetooth settings to
\my flash disk\miomap\miomap\voice and transfer the zip file as an object transfer.
After getting a Toshiba stack to run on my Sony I could use the bluetooth file transfer profile which allowed access to the full flashdisk (which then made unlocking the unit much easier!) then just drag and drop the zip file to \my flash disk\miomap\miomap\voice

Ian,
I have managed to install the UK female voice onto my Mio C710 and thanks for your help but I now have another problem.
Whilst transfering the data I have accidently transferred the file to the root directory of the Mio and I have also created 2 new folders on the root. How do i remove items from root directory of the Mio.
By the way I could only use the first method you spoke about. |

I've just downloaded the Bluesoleil software and i have managed to remove the unwanted files. The only problem i have now is that I cannot get my Nokia phone to sync up to nokia phone suite.
What do I do now? keep the bluesoleil for connectivity to my C710 or keep the normal bluetooth software for connectivity to phone suite. |

I have copied Phillipa to the voices directory but I cannot see it in the list of languages - This is on 3.2 BTW. Tried the paper clip in the bottom - no change. |

Have you tried a hard reset using the switch at the bottom of the unit.
I think I read you have to leave it off for a minute or so.
Give that a try. |

After re doing the speedcam maps I loaded them up via bluetooth and decided to check the voices directory. The Phillipa file was there - but it was not the correct size. I suspect the BT transfer crapped out and I did not notice. Refreshed the copy and Phillipa came up in the list.
Moral of the story - Check the uploaded file sizes! _________________ Mio C710 on MioMap 3.3 |
