Mapopolis had painted themselves into the corner by not providing any map updates for Europe since 2003.

Fortunately this has changed now, and I have used these good news as a reason (some may say shameless plug) to review Mapopolis again.

Those who read my comments on the site's forums may have noticed that ".. or you can use Mapopolis" is a standard part of my daily vocabulary.

Read on why I keep saying that.

Lutz,

Nice review. You have captured the "experience" of Mapopolis that many consumers miss when shopping for a road-navigation solution.

I became a Mapopolis user about 4 years ago (USA user) and I'm hooked! While other PDA-based navigators have features here-and-there that I prefer from time-to-time...in the final analysis, NONE compare favorably to Mapopolis across the entire road-navigation experience. It would take several competing products combined to achieve the spectrum of features available in Mapopolis. You've highlighted the important distinctions well in your review, and you've really just scratched the surface! It really comes down to real-world navigating experience.

I, too, yearn for an iGO-style user interface for Mapopolis -- you may recall I suggested one very similar right down to the floating buttons (still available here). However, I find myself willing to give up 3D-map view and a finger-friendly GUI in order to maintain the depth of features and flexibility of Mapopolis. But you're correct, you have to be a bit of a "Mapopolis geek" to dig all this "flexibility" out of Mapopolis. Point-in-case, I'm still disappointed with the map management system in Mapopolis.

Oh well, I still love Mapopolis and I simply can't be happy with any other PDA-based navigator -- to date.

Dave
