Google have launched their Google Maps service for UK users. Google allows you to search for places, Points Of Interest and retrieve full street level maps from http://maps.google.c.o.uk . The interface is superbly simply and maps load quickly plus the maps can be dragged around using the mouse and zoomed in/out.

Google appear to be using a mix of Navteq and TeleAtlas data according to the copyright information, certainly browsing my local area reveals map errors common to TeleAtlas map data that have long since been fixed in Navteq data.

Damn you beat me to it! I'd spotted the error but a slow link meant I was having trouble accessing the story to correct the mistake!

Thanks for alerting me anyway Smile

Another google map post was started here yesterday and and seems to have come to a halt in favour of this one so I'll re post my question/observations here Smile :
I checked this out today and noticed that the map data is shown as "Map data 2005 Navteq,Tele atlas" Does this mean that Tomtom v5 maps will be based on the same data? If so it will be a good way of cheching how up to date the v5 maps will be ! I really hope they are not the ones to be used as I have noticed that there has not been any correction to "no right turns" I informed Tele Atlas about last August ,also the new Newport Bye pass is not shown despite being completed in autumn 2004!

The whole housing development I live in (5 streets of almost 200 houses in Glenrothes, Fife which have been occupied for 3 or 4 years) is missing from Google maps. My D3 maps show 3 of the streets.

This is a bit annoying because if you see a map error then you are not sure if the maps were TeleAtlas or Navteq ones. :x

Who suplies their data ? as they still show that it is posible to turn right to Coleford off the A40 at Monmouth which has had a No Right Turn sign on it for many years!!

Regarding map errors - the off-sliproad from the A1(M) southbound at Welwyn is absent from TomTom maps and the Google map - and I've been using this road for the past 5 1/2 years! Reported to TeleAtlas 7th May 2004 - still classified as 'Under Treatment'

It shows the Republic of Ireland as well under the UK banner but the map information they are using is three year old Tele Atlas data which is now so out of date as to make it useless.

The Co-Pilot Navtech data I use is much more up to date but still about 15 months out of sync.

Not very quick on an older PC Sad

Also, it looks like map24 and Google have some sort of tie-in in operation - see...

...for more info

That link should have led you to the info - however it doesn't! The text is as follows:

"Due to the new cooperation between Google, Inc, and Mapsolute GmbH, maker of the unique mapping portal Map24.com, it is now possible to search for city maps in all European Google search engines. If you enter a city name into Google.co.uk, the first result list entry is a special link to Map24.com that brings up the corresponding city map. On the result page, for sure, the full set of the rich Map24 options is available to the users."
