Sounds reasonable to me as well, as it's subcategories that screwed up in this instance |

This cropped last week with another user, and is on the 'to do' list.
If you do need to have more than 20 Subcategories, then there are 2 options:
1: Download more than 1 OV2 File and use POIEdit to append the files.
2: Download as a single CSV, or ASC, file as use MakeOV2 to convert the text file.
#2 is quicker, once the MakeOV2.exe is available, as you can simply drag the text file to MakeOV2 for the conversion to be almost instant. _________________ Richard

I wanted to give this a try, as it seems much simpler than POIEdit. I've downloaded and unzipped ov2tools.zip, but when I double-click MakeOV2 a command prompt window flashes on the screen for a fraction of a second, but I can't access it. I've tried using the Start command to access it with the same result.
OS is Windows 7. Any suggestions would be much appreciated! _________________ Anita

Hi Anita, Have you tried switching Win7 to compatibility mode? Not being a Windows man myself I'm not sure how to do this but I have seen it mentioned more than a few times. _________________ Garmin Nuvi 2599

In the Zipfile you downloaded is a Text File with instructions.
The 2 methods for using MakeOV2.
1: Open a command window first and navigate to the Folder where MakeOV2 is. On the Command Line type "MakeOV2 inputfilename" without the quotes. The Input File should be in the same Folder.
2: (To my mind the quicker and easiest method). Use Windows Explorer to navigate to the correct Folder. Left Click the Input File, and Drag to MakeOV2.
MakeOV2 can be placed in any Folder. I use a "POI Folder" where I place all the Files I need to convert.
I don't use Windows 7, but I assume Windows Explorer is the same, and I haven't had to use MakeOV2 for a couple of years now. _________________ Richard

I did RTFM, but this is all the text file has about MAKEOV2:
Quote: | MAKEOV2 1.1
===========
The use of MAKEOV2.EXE is as follows:
MAKEOV2 inputfilename [outputfilename]
The input file should be a text file (extension ASC is recommended!) that
should simply contain lines of text. Any line starting with a semi-colon
will be ignored. Empty lines will also be ignored. All other lines are
expected to represent points of interest. Such a line should specify a
longitude, a latitude and a name, seperated by commas.
It is recommended that the name is put between double quotes.
A name should not contain double quotes. Longitudes and latitudes may be
specified either as degrees and fractions of degrees, or in degrees,
minutes and seconds. Both colons and single-quote/double-quote notation
may be used for minutes and seconds. So, all the following lines are
all equivalent:
53.5 , 4 , "Truckers Restaurant La Bamba"
53.5000000 , 4.00000000 , "Truckers Restaurant La Bamba"
53'30"00 , 4'00"00 , "Truckers Restaurant La Bamba"
53'30 , 4'0 , "Truckers Restaurant La Bamba"
53:30:0 , 4 , "Truckers Restaurant La Bamba" |
Maybe I should do a fresh download.
I have to go out now, but I'll try the instructions in your post as soon as I get back. _________________ Anita

I tried it on the ATM POIs and it worked first go. I just dragged the .csv file onto the makeov2.exe icon and hey presto a .ov2 file was created. No need to try and open makeov2.exe |

Thanks, Richard, as you said it's very quick and easy , but with just the instructions in the text file I wouldn't have known that was what I had to do. I've added your above instruction to the file so when I come to use MakeOV2 again I've got a reminder if I need it! _________________ Anita

That's fine, Richard, I'm just glad you mentioned MakeOV2 here at all.
I didn't download POIs very often because it was such a drag having to decide which 20 subcategories to choose from the large categories like supermarkets and food & drink, and the POIEdit approach is so cumbersome. I hadn't realised there was such a simple way of doing it, and will now make much better use of the POIs.
Maybe a link to this method could be added to the note on the download page? _________________ Anita
