 The fact that you are reading this suggests you will have at least one portable electronic 'gadget' in the household and the likelihood is you will have several. If you are anything like me you might even have a collection of anonymous black 'wall wart' chargers hidden in cupboards and drawers!
Because many devices have their own chargers (mobile phones are particularly bad in this regard) just trying to locate the correct one can be a mighty task. Going on holiday means an alarming collection of chargers, charge leads and international adapters to suit and that's if you have been lucky enough to locate them all in the first place!
So when Philips contacted me and asked if I'd like to test the Power2Charge SCM7880, one of their new Power4Life product range of chargers I was keen to see if these could be the solution to the problem.

Great review and nice little product.
Just 1 downside, shame about the skimpy internal battery being only 1000Mah, won't fully charge most devices from flat.
What a pity, would have brought one otherwise. I'll just stick with my old PowerMonkey least that's got a 2200mah battery in it. |

Fair point, I do mention that in my conclusion. It's been fine for my usage but if you need a larger capacity they do have an 8000mAh model but it is a rather less palatable £113.00.

Nice looking device that does two things in one but I just bought a very slim portable Lion battery from Maplin that is 2000 mAh and it was on sale at £9.99.
It's got adapter bits for most phones and is extremely thin.
Just a warning for those with an Iphone 3G, they've changed the charging requirements for the 3G and not all existing chargers will work, I wonder if the Philips one would work, anyone tried it?

Do you have a link to the Maplin's product? The Philips charges both iPhone 2G and 3G without issue btw.

It doesn't do the same as the Philips charger, you charge it from the mains or the USB port on your PC and then you can use it to charge your devices, but it will not charge the Iphone 3G, until I get round to modding it that is.

Yes but why id that?
I just bought this product yesterday, hoping that i will get to charge my ipod touch 2g directly from the main.
But it seems there is a two step procedure.
First charge the internal battery and then from battery mode charge the ipod. Why the heck is that?
Is there any known solution? Because i cannot seem to find a way to charge it directly from the mains.
BTW Whys is it registered under the Power2Charge and not Power2Go series of Philips? This is definitely a portable solution.
EDIT:I'm Talking of course of the philips 7880 not any other alternative chargers mentioned here. |
