How to copy my memory card to a new larger capacity one

If you find yourself running out of space on the memory card, perhaps it is time to consider a larger capacity card?

With memory cards being at an all time low this could cost considerably less than you think.

Celebrity voices, larger POI files, larger map files and the actual application which has grown in size; this is becoming more of a necessity than previously.

First a quick note on card quality, please don't go and get the cheapest card you can find on E-bay, the chances are there will be an issue with the speed the card can be read from, this can result in a totally non working installation, which often results in a display like this:

Go for a reputable card manufacturer and one that offers a high read/ write speed, if unsure please ask on the forum, there is little point in me listing good cards today, by next month/ year that information will be out of date.

First of all you need to copy the existing card to your computer:

If you have already performed a back-up of the existing card then you can use this as the basis for the upgrade, otherwise back up the existing card as follows:

Use a memory card reader, remove the memory card from the device and insert it to a card reader.

Please go to Windows Explorer Tools/ Folder Options, select the "View" tab and make sure:

Show hidden files and folders IS Selected
Hide extensions for known file types IS NOT Selected

Create a folder on your PC, where you know you can find it again afterwards, the desktop is great for this.

Highlight all the files and folders on the TomTom card then right click and select "Copy" from the pop-up box.

Now go to your new folder created above open it, right click and from the pop-up box select "Paste" this will copy all the data from the card to the PC.

Second you need to copy the back-up to your new Memory card:

With the data on the PC, remove the TomTom Memory Card and insert the new blank card to the card reader.

Using Windows Explorer locate your new folder containing the TomTom data, open it and select all the folders/ files within it, right click and select "Copy" from the pop-up.

Using Windows Explorer locate the new memory card in the card reader, (it should contain nothing at this point) right click and select "Paste" from the pop-up.

When the file transfer is complete remove the memory card from the card reader and put it back in the TomTom device, start the unit and away you go with a larger card.

Thanks for that Mike, I have done it, the 'copied' folder contains about 1Mb less than the properties of the original supplied card, followed your instructions to the letter-should I be worried about this?

Hi Mike,

I dont have a spare SD card at the moment, & naturally I dont feel like formatting the original TT card just incase my copy doesnt work, looks like I'm going to go for the 1Gb card for my US maps that I intend to purchase soon

Thanks for the information it was very helpful, the TOm TOM site has no mention of this in their FAQs.

I did not have a card reader so just copied the files from the TOM TOM then switched it off and inserted the new card. When I switched it on the pc recognised the device and then after removing a file that had appeared on the card (TOM TOM Home I think....) I then copied the files over no problem. Now works like a dream and loads of room for 'stuff'!

Couple of tips on this subject:

I can confirm the comments at the start of the thread re card quality/speed. Go for a high speed card rather than the bog standard Sandisk cheapo (which is probably counterfeit anyway if it came from eBay)
and
you MIGHT come across a problem (I did) of the new card not working correctly which is caused by a TT Go memory glitch. Checkout the Tom Tom site (or contact me) for the 'fix' which resets/clears the static RAM in the TTGo and will overcome the problem. I suspect that some GOOD cards got blamed for this problem !

HI my first post,

I just bought a tomtom one regional. I loaded the home software and did a back up, next day the other half used it no problems, I went to back it up again after installing the speed camera locations, just to be safe. Plugged it all in, tomtom home froze..

I thought, turned it all of tried to start my tomtom now I get the dreaded red cross of doom, tried to reformat the card using my card rerader... nothing Pc won't even recognize it. card is knackered! Sad

So my problem is, If I buy a nice 1gb sandisk ultra 11 card can I get the backup copy from the Home software onto the card? I know where the file is within the program.

It's either that or I've got to go through the painfull proces which is tomtom support.

If you've got problems with a card its worth formatting it with specific SD formatter program (NOT Windows) e.g.

Note the 2nd paragraph " ..SD/SDHC Memory Card file systems formatted with generic operating system formatting software do not comply with the SD Memory Card specification"

Well I just done a Windows Explorer backup and I did ctrl+x instead of ctrl+c by mistake and when I turned on the TomTom it would not work LMAO for being DAFT, so now I am copying everything back so will see if it works Laughing Out Loud

I AM looking at a sandisk ultra 4gb for £8 what i want to no what format does the tomtom read is it fat? or NTFS ? also i am running vista

TomTom recommend FAT32 (see HERE and click the link at the bottom), but you shouldn't need to format a new card at all.
In fact several people on the forums have messed up brand new cards by using Windows standard formatter on SD cards. There is a link in the posts above to a specialist SD card formatting program, but it SHOULD be OK to use on the TomTom straight out of the box (or blister pack if you CAN get it out!)
