|
|
Last year TomTom invited some of the Community Websites to Amsterdam to give a presentation about the Traffic product and to show us around their operation. Only sites operating in the countries where traffic was available were invited so there was only representation from France, Germany, Holland and the UK.
This year was different. The meeting was opened up to the whole of Europe and we had over 13 GPS experts turn up. And the guy to travel the furthest was our own Lutz, all the way from Houston!
Essentially the meeting had two objectives: To inform us of what is happening in the TomTom Navigation product ranges; and to find better ways for TomTom to work with the community sites.

Quote: | . In particular we were interested in the way that TomTom were able to create a database of Speed Cameras for the UK, Belgium, and Holland within a few weeks. A task that has taken us over 3 years to achieve. Sander was unable to provide an answer for us and committed to provide us with these details later. |
I'm very interested too, please make sure that when they provide the answer you make it well known on the site or in the latest news! , dont want to miss it. |

Quote: | So what do you think happens when a group of 13 GPS specialists plus a few Amsterdam locals try to get from the TomTom offices to a restaurant? Yep you have guessed it we end up "Geographically Embarrassed" . |
Doesn't give the users much confidence in TomTom's products. _________________ Graham.

I think it was more due to the fact that we were all chatting and the guys leading us thought that they knew where they were. The streets where we were had tall buildings and were narrow. In the circumstances the GPS did well. Most wouldnt have got a fix in those conditions.
It did make us giggle somewhat though... :P _________________ Mike Barrett |

It only goes to emphasise the total lack of managerial control within TomTom if the manager doesn't know the source of the Speed camera database. Just looking on the forums that host the databases it doesn't require a detective to find were the sourced it from. _________________ Graham.

Me too. you guys done sum great work getting the cams for us. I dont see how they could have made their database so quick if they didnt take it from one already there. |

Dis the discussions regarding the Camera POIs touch on why the different charges between countries?

Basically I think that the concept is that the UK has more cameras therefore TomTom can charge more for them.
I am not sure how many TomTom have in their database, as it encrypted there is no way to work it out. We have over 6000 in the PocketGPSWorld.com database. In holland there are about 1000 and Belgium 400. _________________ Mike Barrett |

I'll bet that was a wild night in 'The Dam' getting pi**ed and cooing over tomtom. Did anyone mention to tomtom that perhaps a move to Navteq might be a good idea as Teleatlas maps are by far the better option? |

Or what I meant to say was Navteq maps are far superior. |

So Navigator users will forever be an afterthought? That is what it says to me. TTN4 and TTN5 certainly look like they were designed that way. |

Quote: | Currently there are 65 people supporting TomTom in 9 different languages from Amsterdam. Roy is looking to recruit another 40 starting 1st September and a further 30 or so support staff before the end of this year. This will enable TomTom to keep their support lines open during the evening and provide a better service to clients. |
I'd just prefer if their phone lines could support more than a few phone calls during business hours for a start. |

I dont believe that to be the case. The way TomTom have structured their software platforms doesn't favour any specific hardware as this can be abstracted from the main codebase. This was the whole idea of the system enabling a common navigation engine where the main development happens then the customisations for each hardware platform are made.
With this philosophy in mind this gives the PDA and SmartPhone platforms an equal priority as far as the software goes.
The difference comes with the hardware. Obviously TomTom has no (or little) influence as far as PDA and SmartPhone manufacturers are concerned, but as SatNav moves into the mass market it will be the GO style of device that will take the main share of the sales. For TomTom it makes a lot of commercial sense to focus a lot of energy in this area. Hopefully the benefits from this will be passed back to the PDA users through their software infrastructure. _________________ Mike Barrett |

This is part of what they are trying to achieve. Currently the phone support finishes at 4:00. Roy wants to extend this to at least 6:00 UK time. _________________ Mike Barrett |
