I have just received my first GPS unit.. A Magellan Meridian Gold... When I tried to up load a map to the magellan it said there wasn't sufficient memory to do so.

Be that I'm completely without a clue does the 16 mb memory that comes with it not accept additional uploads to it.. And do I have to buy an SD Card and install it to upload the new maps to it.

I am using Maps and Streets from Magellan as software.. Any help would be appreciated/.

Mike, it depends on the size of the map you're trying to upload. 16mb really isn't a lot for maps, I would certainly recommend getting an SD card.

I believe you are confusing the 16mb internal memory with available memory. The Meridian Gold has a 16mb memory with a national map already installed. It is not a highly detailed map but I believe it consumes all of the available internal memory. By installing an SD card, you can download much more detailed maps. An average state is 16mb or less. With a 64 mb card, you can theoretically install 4 16mb maps. Actually, you can only load 4 maps up to 16 mb each as an *.img file. There are however ways to load dozens of maps on this type of card along with dozens or routes and hundreds of waypoints. The card is a worthwhile investment.
