The Birmingham Mail has revealed that nearly all of the city's new speed cameras are not switched on. Their Freedom of Information investigation shows that only one or two of new average sites are on at any one time.
The eight new point-to-point sites went "live" at the start of August - but just two of them caught speeders during the month. And almost every one of the 6113 drivers recorded speeding in the first month was by just the one camera.
Officials have said that it was not the intention to have them all on simultaneously claiming that the reason behind the scheme is deterrence and not to raise revenue.
A speed camera partnership spokesperson commented: "Like most other road safety schemes, the cameras are enforced on a rolling basis. It would defeat the purpose of the safety scheme to reveal which cameras are active at any one time. So far 6,000 people have been caught speeding and putting other road users, and themselves, at risk. That’s 6,000 drivers caught breaking the law before even a full rotation of the active cameras."
They added: "Once a full rotation has been completed, we'll publish all of the data, including how many drivers are caught speeding at each specific location."
A Birmingham City Council cabinet member for transport and roads said: "This isn't about making money, but about making our roads safer for all and the fact these cameras operate on a rotational basis further demonstrates this. It does not matter which cameras are operating at any one time, speed limits are there for a reason and if you exceed them then do not be surprised to be caught on camera."

Well that's a new idea, isn't it? Set up a load of cameras that aren't working, so nobody gets caught. Then turn a couple on so that people get deterred. Three out of four cameras won't get you because they're not switched on, so that will deter you more than if they were swtiched on. Is that logic?
Average speed cameras are ideal for controlling speeding, but only if they are switched on - people who speed SHOULD be fined and the more publicity about it the more likely others are to be deterred. Surely, if you switch on all the cameras and publicise the fact that if they speed they WILL be caught, you stand a chance of deterring people. The people who get caught have obviously NOT been deterred and in the fullness of time might lose their licences to the points totting up system, a fact for which we should all be grateful.
I'm sorry, but this really does sound to me like making money.

The news letter title for this article says Bristol rather than Birmingham!
You can of course guess which city is going to put average speed cameras along its miles and miles of wide open dual carriageways that are inflicted with ridiculous 40mph limits.

I don't think it is Bristol, well I have heard nothing about it. The only thing in Bristol is the M32 speed reduction and alongside speed cameras.

I don't think a spelling checker would have helped as Bristol was spelled correctly.

I obviously should have written "Apologies, it's Birmingham, it seems Darren sent the newsletter in its draft before the spellcheck and the final check. He would have most likely picked up the Mots in the spell check.
