GPS Joins Fight Against Crime This Christmas
Article by: rob brady Date: 31 Oct 2012
GPS technology is being heralded as the must-have instrument in crime fighting this winter as gadget lovers are being encouraged to protect their devices by enabling GPS tracking.
Popular electronic devices, such as smartphones, laptops and games consoles, are compatible with these systems which enable the exact location of the items to be pinpointed when activated.
For devices which have been lost or stolen, this is invaluable information which can lead to their successful return and potentially aid with the conviction of those responsible for the theft.
With the run-up to Christmas already underway, the number of these devices being purchased is expected to increase - with the possibility of thefts rising as a result.
This has prompted local police authorities, such as those in South Tyneside, Northumbria, to encourage residents to activate GPS tracking in their valuables - with posters on the safety measure being displayed in local schools and shops.
Speaking on behalf of the idea, Acting Detective Sergeant Colin Coyle of South Tyneside explained the simple measure "can make the difference between losing the item forever or having it tracked, located and seized by police".
He added that traditional police methods would still be used with the new initiative, but recognised the role which modern technology can play in achieving successful results in the fight against crime.
