A driver has been fined £100 for blocking the view of a mobile speed camera van.
The driver positioned his van in front of a speed camera vehicle in Rotherham, South Yorkshire blocking its view of oncoming traffic.
A spokesman for the South Yorkshire Safer Roads Partnership commented: "A white Ford Transit van parked directly behind an enforcement vehicle with the sole intention of stopping officers from performing their speed enforcement duties".
He added: "Noting that the vehicle had parked illegally on the zig-zag lines near to a crossing facility, our officers requested the assistance from the police constable that works within the department. Next time you consider parking behind one of our enforcement vehicles, be warned. It may be a police constable within the vehicle. If this is the case, you may be charged with obstructing a police officer. This carries a maximum penalty of one month's imprisonment and, or, a fine of up to £1,000."

So was he fined for blocking the speed camera, or was he actually fined for parking illegally on the zig-zags?!

Anyone who deliberately parks on zig zags next to a police vehicle deserves to be done simply for being stupid, what did he expect?

Th report seems ti imply that had the van not been parked on the zigzags they may not have been able to do much about it, as the zigzags seem to be the main reason for calling the cops.

Possibly something. Possibly nothing. But the point raised is the suspicion that the motorist's fine had absolutely nothing to do with blocking the view of the camera van as the headline suggests, but everything to do with being parked on zigzags.

Possibly the crux of the matter is that the operator was a civilian and the only resolution was to involve the police for parking on the zigzag, if the operator had been a policemen then the result would have been different and quicker. i.e impeding an officer in his duty?

This seems to have an echo of a previous story; in order to prove the obstruction of a police officer, you would have to prove there was a crime he/she needed to deal with.

So presumably, if the operator cannot tell whether the blocked driver was speeding or not, they can't do anything about it? I would not like to be the one who tested that theory in a court of law. So what is the offence for a laser jammer?

My ancient memory has cranked up, It was the driver who flashed his lights at oncoming cars to warn them of a speed trap. He was done for obstruction, but got off as the police could not prove any of the cars he flashed were speeding.

My memory crank reckons I read a similar story about it in France. The difference being that the offender didn't get off, because they don't muck about with rubbish like that in France!
