A satnav has been blamed again for the actions of careless driving.
A Torquay taxi driver has claimed that his satnav was responsible for his decision to perform a u-turn on a dual carriageway. Anthony Ryan's error meant that he was now driving towards oncoming traffic.
This caused another motorist to swerve and crash into the central reservation - who was lucky to avoid serious injury, sustaining minor wounds and whiplash.
Ryan's female passenger, who the cabbie claimed was drunk, said that the taxi passed up to three vehicles going in the right direction before he made his second U turn to face the right way again - he denied this. He did execute a second U turn to go to the aid of the injured driver.
58 Year old Ryan told Exeter Magistrates' Court that he lost his bearings in dark after encountering roadworks. He said, "I got confused, I had one eye on the satnav. The lady was not sure where she was going. I was driving along and the satnav told me to turn round.
He added, "I did a U turn like a silly man. I did not overtake any cars coming towards me."
He was fined £785 and received seven points on his driving licence. He escaped a ban due to the nature of his livelihood.
