A9 average speed cameras on hold until October
Article by: rob brady Date: 19 Feb 2014
The average speed cameras that were planned for Scotland's A9 have been put on the back burner until October.
Originally, the first cameras, part of a £2.5 million system, were due for installation early this year with completion expected in the summer.
It has also been reported that, due to technical difficulties, the cameras will not cover dual carriageway sections north of Perth as previously proposed - mobile police units will continue to cover that stretch. It was previously planned to cover the full distance between Dunblane and Inverness, a total of 136 miles.
Average speed cameras will now cover eight separate sections of road. Seven single carriageway stretches north of Perth will be monitored along with the dual carriageway stretch south from Perth to Dunblane. Single carriageway speed limits will be 60mph and dual carriageways 70mph.
There will also be a lorry speed limit trial to coincide with the scheme, an increase from 40mph to 50mph, on single carriageways between Perth and Inverness.

Is this perhaps because the cost was deemed too much?
It will be interesting to learn the outcome whether e.g. cars overtake the caravans and lorries only to have to slow down again.
And what of the many tourists and visitors in the summer who may be able to disregard this.
Don't be surprised if it (again) changes within a few years.

Are they now planning to start the installation in October? Possibly not the best place in the world to be working outdoors through the winter!

Here's a Telegraph article where a Scottish police officer states that using mobile cameras is 'like shooting fish in a barrel'.
